James Killingbeck ‘Sailing on Thin Ice to North West Greenland’ and a commemoration of the Society’s 10th birthday, with specially baked birthday cake!

'Sailing on Thin Ice' is the story about a voyage of a small research yacht, ‘Gambo’, sailing from Wales to N.W. Greenland. The talk will join the small crew as they cast off bound for icy fjords, soon to be joined by a BBC film team. It will explain some of the ice/ocean interaction fieldwork that took place in the ensuing year and following seasons as well as what that work achieved. The team's experiences ranged from gigantic iceberg calving events, to unique Inuit customs, to helicopters and hovercrafts!

Gambo was sailed across the Atlantic in 2012 by a crew of 4. The project was under the direction of Professor Alan Hubbard of Aberystwyth University and the University of Tromso. Alan is the owner of Gambo. James Killingbeck was one of the crew and became skipper in 2014 and will be giving the talk. He has recently returned to NW Greenland working on another sailing vessel, 'Ivilia', as part of the NASA funded 'Oceans Melting Greenland project'.
